 Lift Truck Chain Erie - The city of Erie, Pennsylvania is located within the northwestern area of the state. The city of Erie derives its name from the lake that got its name from the Native American tribe which lived along the southern shoreline of the Great Lake. With a population of 102,000 Erie is the 4th largest city in the state of Pennsylvania. The Metropolitan Area comprises approximately 280,000 people. The Urbanized Area population is approximately 195,000. The city forms the seat of government for Erie County.
The city is comparatively close to the major metro areas of New York, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Cleveland, Ohio. The economy is mostly dependent upon manufacturing, while it used to be a prime place for heavy industry. Tourism, higher education and healthcare are emerging as greater driving factors of the economy. Presque Isle State Park is visited by millions each year for water recreation. There are various attractions like for instance a casino and a horse racetrack that have been named for the state park.
Founded in 1795, Erie was originally settled by both English and French settlers. Soon after, the town supported a major port and was focused on the trading of salt. In the year 1813, one of the proudest historical moments occurred in the city when Commodore Oliver Perry, whose majority of ships was constructed within Erie, defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
The city of Erie emerged as a maritime center and eventually became a railroad hub during the westward expansion of America. The city of Erie had become a big industrial center by the 20th century. The manufacturing focus was mainly on steel and iron. These days, the city has grown to attract a more diverse mix of mid-sized industries. Like for instance, small plastic and steel plants have emerged and become driving forces in the city's economy. The tourism sector has largely grown in recent years also.
The city is the primary access point to Lake Erie, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. There are many places of interest in the city for both culture and recreation. For instance, the Erie Children's Museum specializes in visitors between the ages of 2 and 12 and provides a large variety of interactive displays in the areas of the humanities and science. The Erie Art Museum is situated in a former U.S. Customs House. It provides a wealth of changing art exhibits focusing much on folk art and contemporary art.
