Tourism, higher education and healthcare are emerging as greater driving factors of the economy. Presque Isle State Park is visited by millions each year for water recreation. Founded in 1795, Erie was originally settled by both English and French settlers. Soon after, the town supported a major port and was focused on the trading of salt. In the year 1813, one of the proudest historical moments occurred in the city when Commodore Oliver Perry, whose majority of ships was constructed within Erie, defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.

The city of Erie emerged as a maritime center and eventually became a railroad hub during the westward expansion of America. The city of Erie had become a big industrial center by the 20th century. The manufacturing focus was mainly on steel and iron. These days, the city has grown to attract a more diverse mix of mid-sized industries. Like for instance, small plastic and steel plants have emerged and become driving forces in the city's economy. The tourism sector has largely grown in recent years also.

The city is the primary access point to Lake Erie, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
