Lift Truck Chain Topeka

Lift Truck Chain Topeka - Topeka is a city within the central state of Kansas. It is the state capital and county seat of Shawnee County. Located on the Kansas River in the northeast part of the state, the city of Topeka has a population of 127,473. The Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of around 230,800. Other counties in the metro area are Jackson, Jefferson, Shawnee, Osage and Wabaunsee.

The city was the site of the landmark legal Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, where it was declared that it was illegal to declare racial segregation within public schools. Three Navy ships have been named after the city of Topeka to honor its importance.

The word Topeka in the language of the Loway and the Kansa means "to dig good potatoes." The prairie potato was an important food source for the Native Americans who inhabited the region. The Kansa people called what is presently known as the Kansas River as "Topeka." The name was initially recorded during the year 1826, but the settlement was not called Topeka until 1855 when the founders declared it "novel, of Indian origin and euphonious of sound." Joseph James (likewise known as Jojim) was a mixed-blood Kansa Indian who suggested the name. The city was a Free-State township founded by Eastern antislavery men following the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Topeka was established as a city during the year 1857.

Over 50 percent of the city's economy is based on services and government. City, county and state governments employ about one quarter of the labor force. Topeka's biggest employer is the state of Kansas. 30% of the labor force is employed in services industries. Many are employed in printing and publishing, food processing, flour mills and iron foundries. There are several Fortune 500 companies with manufacturing or distribution facilities within Topeka. Popular companies include Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Frito-Lay Inc., Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, Hallmark Cards and Payless Shoe Source.

The city of Topeka boasts lots of fine art galleries with significant selections of art, like for example the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University. A little known fact about the city of Topeka is that it is the home of the logo character for Mad Magazine, the character Alfred E. Neuman.
