The city is separated from Bakersfield by the Tehachapi mountain range (to the north) and from the Los Angeles Basin by the San Gabriel Mountains (to the south.) Lancaster is situated around seventy miles north from Los Angeles. It is the 9th fastest growing city in the United States, having gone from 37,000 in 1977 to its existing population of 145,074.

With an annual income of $61,298, the standard of living is high for nearly all families when compared to the national averages. The housing prices in the area are also less than the state average at about $302,000. One interesting fact is that 70 percent or more of the people of Lancaster own their own houses.

Lancaster city puts a huge priority on local business and supports growth by providing less red tape and low priced land as an incentive. Growth has quickly increased during the years as distribution centers for companies such as S, Michaels and Rite Aid have developed.

The Lancaster Redevelopment Agency is responsible for attracting a variety of companies to the city. It has recently attracted a variety of dining and retail businesses to Lancaster Town Center as well as Front Row Center. The Agency has designated five locations as industrial and business parks, which are Enterprise Business Park, Fox Field Industrial Corridor, North valley Industrial center, Lancaster Business Park and North Lancaster Industrial Center.

One major objective for development in the city is to continue the downtown revitalization project. There are several historic buildings and a lot of contemporary amenities currently within the downtown area comprising a performing arts center and a library. The Lancaster Old Town Site (LOTS) is responsible for the renovation of business facades in the Old Town area.

The BVLD, is a revitalized stretch of Lancaster Boulevard which runs roughly a mile which was just completed in the year 2010. It is located between sierra highway and 10th street west.
