The first settlement took place during the year 1674 in a region known as Town Plot. This region was soon vacated just after King Philip's War during 1675. The plot was later returned in 1677, within a region which was just a little west of the first settlement. Both of these historic locations are marked. Initially the city of Waterbury was called "Mattatock" after the Algonquin word "Matetacoke", which translates to "place without trees". When the city was admitted to the colony of Connecticut on May 15, 1686, it was called the city of Waterbury. It was known as Waterbury after all of the streams that run into the Naugatuck River. At that time, the city of Waterbury comprised several parts which will later become their own towns, like Watertown, Plymouth, Wolcott, Prospect, Naugatuck, Thomaston, and Middlebury.

Because of its role in the manufacturing of brassware, Waterbury has earned the nickname "Brass City". The city of Waterbury is well-known for its gorgeous clocks and watches. The cities motto, Written in marble above the city hall entrance is "Quid Aere Perennius". Translated, "Quid Aere Perennius" means "What Is More Lasting Than Brass?" The city of Waterbury is renowned for its advanced technology, gorgeous historic architecture and vibrant art.
