Eight hospitals and seven educational institutions are located within Providence. The city of Providence is seeking to be called today as the "Creative Capital".
As state capital, government services are essential to the economy of Providence. The finance sector is also strong, with several major financial companies and many smaller financial firms located there. Citizen bank's head offices are located in Providence.
Jewelry and silverware manufacturing and design are still dynamic industries. Providence's manufacturing sector nowadays makes such diverse products like for instance plastic and rubber goods, instruments, fabricated metals and electrical equipment. Some companies make supplies for the military. Rhode Island supports business by providing generous job training tax credits to companies. Fortune 500 company Textron and Fortune 1000 company Nortek Incorporated are headquartered in the city. GTECH's global headquarters are also located here.
This modest-sized city has an unusually rich cultural and arts sector. The Rhode Island School of Design (or also known as RISD) is amongst the top art schools within the United States. The school also houses a fine Museum of Art. Also, the city has the Providence Arts Center, Providence Children's Museum, Roger William park and Zoo, Rhode Island Philharmonic, providence Dunkin' Donut Center and Trinity Repertory Company.
The city of Providence is also the site of the famed College of Culinary Arts, which is located on the campus of Providence's Johnson & Wales University. Culinary school graduates have established various restaurants in the city, giving Providence a lot more eateries per capita than any other major city in the country.
