 Lift Truck Chain Yonkers - The city of Yonkers is located just outside New York City and is only 2 miles north of Manhattan. With a population over more than 195,000, Yonkers is considered the 4th most populated city within New York State and is the biggest in Westchester County. The most inhabited cities within New York State are Rochester, New York and Buffalo.
Numerous attractions are situated in the city of Yonkers, like the Sherwood House, the Hudson River Museum, Cross County Shopping Center, the Science Barge, Ridge Hill Shopping Center, and Yonkers Raceway. The raceway recently renovated during the year 2006, adding legalized video slot machine gambling and revitalizing its' clubhouse and grounds. There are some shopping places scattered all over Central Park Avenue, that is commonly referred to as "Central Ave" by residents.
During the latter part of the 1640's, the city's history starts when Adriaen Van der Donck received a land grant form the Dutch East India Company. On the site where the Hudson River intersects the Nepperhan Creek, Van der Donck built one of the region's first saw mills. Van der Donck was affectionately known as Jonk Herr, which translates to young nobleman. Eventually, his land became called "Jonk Heer's land." The phrase developed into "the Younckers" and then finally into Yonkers. Because of it's centralized site, the city of Yonkers quickly established itself as a major trading center. Throughout the early history of the city it was predominantly an agricultural community, but it's waterfront location rapidly led to innovations in travel, that in turn accelerated the establishment of various industries throughout the city of Yonkers. There are several times during history where Yonkers played a key part in making carpets and hats. Additionally, it was the site of the world's very first elevated mass transit system. The city was first incorporated during the year 1872 with a population of approximately 20,000.
The city has recently put forth a proposal to revitalize the locality, with more than $3 billion dollars worth of changes. The proposal promises to add luxury housing, waterfront development, and a lot of commercial and retail space. The goal is to increase tourism as well as the economic importance of the city to the county and New York State.
The city hosts a lot of annual events which can draw thousands of visitors. With average crowds of more than 15,000 individuals, the Yonkers Hudson Riverfest offers a diverse selection of ethic foods. The Untermyer Performing Arts Festival holds performances each and every Saturday evening during summertime. The events, that comprise opera, dance, music and street theatre, are held on the Hudson River and are free. Furthermore, the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra plays five times each year.
